How to read a casino game

RTP, volatility, max win and the rest: what the numbers on a game mean, which ones matter, and how to play smarter with them.

RTP: return to player

RTP is the share of all money bet on a game that it pays back over millions of rounds. A slot with 96% RTP returns $96 for every $100 bet, on average, across everyone, over a very long time.

What it does not tell you is how your next hour will go. In a short session almost anything can happen. RTP is best used to compare games: over a year of play, a 97% game costs you less than a 94% one.

  • Above 96% is good for a slot.
  • 94% to 96% is common.
  • Below 94% means the game keeps more for itself.

The same game can be released with several RTP settings, so check the figure in the game's own info screen before you play.

Volatility: how the wins arrive

Volatility, also called variance, describes the pattern of wins rather than their total.

  • Low volatility: small wins often. Your balance moves gently and lasts longer. Good for long, relaxed sessions.
  • High volatility: long dry spells, then the occasional big hit. Your balance swings hard. Good if you are chasing a big win and accept that most sessions end with nothing.
  • Medium sits between the two.

Two games with the same RTP can feel completely different because of volatility. It is the number that most decides whether you enjoy a game.

Max win

The most a single round can pay, as a multiple of your bet. A 5,000x max win on a $1 bet is $5,000. Big caps make good headlines, but the chance of reaching them is tiny. Do not choose a game on max win alone.

Hit frequency

How often a spin pays anything at all. A 25% hit frequency means roughly one spin in four returns something, often less than you bet. Not every studio publishes it.

Features to know

  • Free spins are triggered by scatter symbols and usually carry the game's biggest wins.
  • Multipliers grow a win, sometimes stacking during a feature.
  • Bonus buy lets you pay up front, often 100x your bet, to go straight to the feature. It does not change the RTP much, but it burns through a balance fast.
  • Megaways and cluster pays change how wins form, so read the paytable once before you play.

Other games at a glance

The house edge is what a game keeps on average, so lower is better for you.

  • Blackjack with good basic strategy: about 0.5%
  • Baccarat, betting on banker: about 1.06%
  • European roulette (one zero): 2.7%
  • American roulette (two zeros): 5.26%
  • Slots: about 3% to 6%

Crash games and other instant games usually show their own RTP on the game screen.

How your bets settle

Game results come from each studio's own certified random number generator. Slotified does not touch them. What we add is open settlement: bets and payouts are recorded on a public blockchain, so anyone can check a payout really happened. See our Fairness page for the live record and the links to each transaction.

Myths worth dropping

  • "It's due to pay." Every spin is independent. A slot that has not paid for an hour is no more likely to pay on the next spin.
  • "This machine is hot." Same answer. Past spins do not change future ones.
  • "Bigger bets win more often." Your stake changes the size of a win, not how often it comes.

Play smarter

  1. Set a budget for the session before you start, and stop when it is spent.
  2. Size your bets so the budget lasts. Around 1% of it per spin gives you about a hundred spins.
  3. Match volatility to your mood: low for a long session, high only with money you are happy to lose.
  4. Try the demo first if the game has one.
  5. Claim your rakeback and other rewards. They lower what the game costs you over time.
  6. Walk away from a win. Setting a target and cashing out when you reach it is a real strategy.
